What is SEO

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation.  It literally does what it says! It OPTIMISES your website to appear on SEARCH ENGINEs.  See?  SEO specialists can perform a range of activities on your website to help get it appearing on search engines when customers type in keywords related to your business.  For example, if you are a hairdresser based in Leeds, you will want to appear when customers type “hairdresser leeds” into Google.  Or, if you specialise in occasion hair, you would want to come up when someone types in “special occasion hair dresser leeds”.

SEO can be divided into three parts.  Onsite SEO, Link Building and Content.

Onsite SEO

These are tasks which are usually undertaken through the back end of your website.  These can include things like:

  • heading tag adjustment
  • title tag adjustment
  • keyword optimisation
  • alt tags
  • image size
  • mobile readiness

Link Building

You need links pointing to your site to demonstrate to Google and other search engines that your website is a good source of information.  You often generate backlinks yourself without really doing anything, through people sharing your website address, or through other websites directly linking to yours.  Some SEO agencies do link building in a good way, others use somewhat old fashioned and certainly frowned upon methods.

Content

The content of your site is very important, as it tells your users what your site is about! It is also used by search engines to determine what your pages are about, and how relevant your site is against keywords.
